Not for me but for US!

The other day in class a young lady said her favorite quote was “Not for me, not for you, but for us.” I sat for a moment and I said to myself yes, that should be life’s motto. Today I took time to look it up and found it comes from the Latin phrase non mihi, non tibi, sed nobis. This spoke to my heart, especially with the climate of today’s societal issues we are experiencing across the nation.

If everything we do is for our own personal gain, we miss it. We must stop letting the voice of capitalism woo us into thinking we must have every new thing that hits the market. Stop letting them tell us that it’s all about self and as long as I am happy that is all that matters. As long as I get everything I want in life, I win. However, we must not be guilted into thinking every ounce of our being should be sacrificially spent doing solely for others. If everything we do is solely for others we still miss it. We must practice self care. We cannot take care of others to the point that we loose ourselves or become burnt out. In order to be helpful to someone else, we ourselves must be physically, mentally and emotionally healthy.

Learning to care for self as well as others gives the balance of Us.

Together we can become great.
